Yamaha U1 Studio Upright Piano

Yamaha U1 Studio Upright Piano

Yamaha 48” Professional Upright Piano.

Designed for the experienced pianist and professional musician, the Yamaha model U1 Studio Upright piano is built in the main factory in Hamamatsu, Japan and offers outstanding musical performance, setting the standards by which many other upright pianos are measured. The “workhorse” model U1 is a part of the Yamaha Classic Collection. A perennial favorite among discerning pianists, they feature outstanding tone, touch and durability. The U-series has historically been Yamaha’s most popular vertical piano line and has had huge financial success. They have had a very long production life, for this industry. Numerous models have been tried for a while and then discontinued or have evolved with a new feature and been renamed, but the U1 has endured. Living space is at a premium in Japan and Europe so fewer grands are sold, making a strong case for a high-quality upright like this. Yamaha also has factories situated in China and Indonesia where their lesser quality lines of pianos are built. Lower labor costs there enable more economical price points.

As always, this piano is sourced locally, per our company policy. It was purchased new, right here in Albuquerque at the original Yamaha piano dealership, Paul Muench Music and has spent its entire life here. So, it is happily acclimated and well-adjusted to our unique desert Southwest climate. It was played very little so the moving parts in the action have minimal wear. It was serviced by competent and knowledgeable technicians. It is in excellent condition – structurally and aesthetically, and should offer the next owner decades of musical fulfillment. We only had to do our usual dealer prep and nothing more. That means pitch correction, voicing, tightening of action screws, minor action regulation, and a thorough cleaning inside. It has the classic Yamaha “feel”; the precision, accuracy and responsiveness that permits vivid musical expression and a wide dynamic range. It also has the classic Yamaha evenness of touch; fast, accurate and responsive with an excellent repetition. The tone is classic Yamaha. It is colorful, harmonic-rich and sonorous with an excellent dynamic range, meaning the pianist can perform the subtlest pianissimo and most forceful fortissimo. Being a 48” vertical with longer bass strings and a larger soundboard, the bass is strong and robust. Hurry on this particular piano, it won’t be here long!

Precision Yamaha low-maintenance piano-action

Yamaha has had a well-deserved reputation for superior quality control and virtually perfect preparation at the factory. They arrive at the dealership in flawless condition. Technicians are enthusiastic about servicing them due to their exceptional engineering and design. Many highly respected musicians are Yamaha Artists and endorse these pianos. Elton John comes to mind. Many schools of music have become All-Yamaha Schools as a means to attract students desiring higher-quality musical instruments during their studies and practice. Institutions especially like the low-maintenance aspect of this model because they are averse to recurring budget costs for tuning and service. You will find the U1 everywhere a professional grade piano is required including homes, houses of worship, on stage, in the recording studio, and elsewhere.

Young Chang model G-185 Grand Piano

Young Chang model G-185 Grand Piano

Young Chang 6’-1” Conservatory Grand Piano.

What a delight to play! What a robust and strong bass response! It is clear, too! And the individual tones are distinguishable in a harmony, not muddy and unfocused. The tenor is rich and warm with a center-mellow timbre. The treble is rounded and bell-like due to its Duplex scale design, and not tinny, metallic and non-melodic. 6’-1” is a very nice size and its allows longer bass strings that are able to vibrate with more power and vibrate longer for a lengthy duration of sustain in tone. The soundboard is larger in area also, and like a bigger speaker cone, it pushes more air as it vibrates, creating larger sound-waves that are a pleasure for the senses. This affordable piano would be suitable for a serious player, a music school, a House of Worship or a performance venue. It has a touch or feel that enables a wider dynamic of range, and it plays responsively, allowing the pianist to perform more expressively. The medium touch-weight (key resistance) is neither too light, nor too heavy because of its well-engineered piano-action geometry. It is designed to be reliable and low-maintenance to save money and the aggravation of playing a keyboard that doesn’t play right.

Half-lid prop position – a handsome way to display your piano.

In 1956 Seoul, South Korea, the three brothers Kim named Jai-Young, Jai-Chang and Jai-Sup reached an agreement with the Yamaha Piano Company of Japan to sell their pianos. Korea was recovering from the devastating war but prospects were bright. Sales were brisk. Economic policies changed and in 1964 they began receiving partially built pianos sent over from Japan to escape stiff tariffs on Japanese goods. The factory finished the pianos and sold them. Eventually, the piano factory was building complete pianos. They built a new factory in Incheon, Korea to accomplish this. Ties were severed with Yamaha in 1975, becoming a competitor and the Young Chang Piano Company was born. The factory is one of the largest in the world. It has built models for numerous other manufacturers over the years including Steinway & Sons and Baldwin. US distribution began in 1978. In 1990 they acquired Kurzweil, a manufacturer of professional keyboards and digital pianos. Young Chang built the largest single piano factory in history in Tianjin, China in 1995.

Steinway model S Grand Piano

Steinway model S Grand Piano

Steinway & Sons Eaves Movie Ranch Grand Piano.

This stately grand piano spent most of its life at the world-famous JW Eaves Movie Ranch located south of Santa Fe, New Mexico just off of the Turquoise Trail. It was a status symbol and the handsome focal point of the ranch house’s formal parlor and surrounded by art and sculpture, fine furniture and floor coverings. It was never on a movie set but instead, a cherished member of the Eaves family in their private residence. A quick Google search will reveal that more than 250 movies have been filmed there and it is still a working movie set. The instrument was originally purchased in 1957 from the longtime Steinway & Sons piano dealership, the venerable Riedling Music Company in downtown Albuquerque. Upon the passing of the founder of the ranch in the 1990’s, the family offered it back for sale to the Steinway dealership and their main sales representative happily purchased it and has lovingly cared for it ever since. Not too surprisingly, the condition is excellent – structurally and aesthetically. We weren’t required to repair or adjust a single thing, though we certainly looked for ways to improve its condition. Since it has lived here in Santa Fe and Albuquerque its entire life, it is happily acclimated to our unique climate.  With the right care, it will be making beautiful music for decades to come.  We are confident to offer a two-year warranty on this instrument. The original Artists bench is included. Professional delivery is also included.

The Steinway & Sons reputation has been established around the world on concert stages, by Concert Grands that measure nine feet in length. The five feet one inch Baby Grand, however, is an integral part of the Steinway history and tradition. The company began building baby grands well over a century ago and today they are a significant part of Steinway’s production. In the 19th century parlor, in the 20th century apartment and conservatory practice room, the need for a fine smaller piano has always existed. The Steinway model S grand piano is just that.

A piano built in the Steinway & Sons tradition which takes up less space than a large grand piano and still offers the best qualities of tone and touch which have become the Steinway hallmark. The Steinway baby piano is every inch a Steinway. It is built by the same men, in the same plant, of the same materials as a Steinway & Sons Concert Grand. The volume of tone will not fill a concert hall but it has a beautiful and smaller tone perfect for a home.

Handmade by the Steinway family themselves.

Steinway & Sons holds most of the patents issued to piano manufacturers for action improvements including the exclusive Accelerated Action, patented in 1936 which increases the speed of repetition.  The 1868 patented Tubular Metallic action frame maintains proper alignment of the action parts.  It consists of seamless brass tubes with rosette-shaped contours, force fitted with maple dowels and brass hangers. The keys are constructed from Bavarian spruce that is high in tensile strength to prevent breakage. The Steinway & Sons pinblock makes it easier to tune the piano precisely and stay in tune longer than others. The Diaphramatic soundboard (US Patent Office – 1936) tapers from five to eight millimeters in thickness from the center to the perimeter. It is constructed from the highest-grade, close-grained, quarter-sawn Sitka spruce from Alaska. Planks are hand-selected to be free of defects and at the end of the day, there is more wood on the floor than actually made it into the piano.

This instrument features the classic “Steinway sound”; having a strong, singing treble and a powerful bass, rich in high harmonics.  The duration of tone (sustain time) is lengthy, which enables legato phrases to be enjoyed.  The dynamic range is wide, allowing the pianist to play expressively and emotively.  It is neither overly mellow and dull or overly bright and tinny.  The mid-treble, where most of the melody lines are played “sings” and doesn’t disappear under the background of an accompaniment.  It has the power that most pianos aspire to but not the brash “loudness” that often results.

They are by far the most popular and largest-selling piano in American history and their slogan was “America’s Favorite Piano”. Among the general public, Baldwin has been one of the most beloved and well-respected pianos in the industry and many are passed down through generations of families. They are frequently used by music teachers, colleges and universities, places of worship and any institutional situation in part because they are affordable and offer a great value but they are also built like Sherman tanks to last. Their Artist endorsement program boasted a large roster of musicians, conductors and composers including Liberace, John Williams (Star Wars soundtrack), Dave Brubeck, Earl Wild and dozens more. This model M features the classic “Steinway sound”, having a strong, singing treble, a resonant tenor mid-range and a powerful bass, rich in high harmonics. With richness, depth and power, they radiate plenty of tonal color. It is due to their combination of harmonics that distinguishes them from other makers.

The Steinway & Sons grand piano action, with its 12,116 individual parts is the vanguard of piano actions. Steinway held most of the patents issued to piano manufacturers for action improvements including the exclusive “Accelerated Action”, which increases the speed of repetition. The patented Tubular Metallic action frame maintains proper alignment of the thousands of action parts. A grand piano-action regulation requires 14 separate adjustments per key. Our talented 88 Keys piano-technicians have been busy, and the piano-action has been well-regulated and ready now for concert performances.
