5’-3” Baby Grand Piano in classic satin ebony.

Though it is cute and petite, this is still a grand piano possessing the superior piano-action inherent to most grand pianos. It plays expressively, accurately and smoothly with a wide dynamic range. With an attractive price tag, the Kohler & Campbell model KIG-54D grand piano has been a big seller in the US and Canada, including Albuquerque. It was purchased new in 2006 at the local authorized Kohler & Campbell piano dealership so it is happily acclimated and fully adjusted to our unique climate. It is also a one-owner and never left the address it was originally delivered to until now so it hasn’t been diminished by being moved around a lot.

Alluring, inside and out.

The piano was barely played because it was intended to be the elegant focal point of the formal living room. This means it has very little wear in the piano-action and other moving parts. It came to us needing very little in the way of improvements, just routine tuning and minor regulating. We thoroughly cleaned the inside, per our usual service. The condition is excellent – structurally and aesthetically, so it ought to provide decades of musical enjoyment. We will be happy to guarantee the instrument for two years. The original matching bench with storage is included. We also include local first-floor professional delivery.

The tone quality is certainly not big, but it sure is pretty. It wasn’t designed to fill a concert hall but its compact size is ideal for the average living room or studio. At 5’-3” in length, it is a larger baby-grand piano. Most are 5’-0” or shorter. The extended size enables longer strings in the deep bass and a larger soundboard. Both of these factors will provide a stronger bass response and a longer duration of sustain. The treble is enhanced by its Duplex-scale design that is normally reserved for longer grand pianos. Its tone quality is a mainstream timbre, not too bright nor mellow. It proudly features German Roslau music wire which are generally considered to be the finest piano strings in the industry. It’s an enjoyable play.

It’s equipped with a true sostenuto middle pedal, usually available only on more expensive pianos. A creative pianist can effectively employ it to simulate four hands and more harmony. The finish is traditional, classic satin ebony. The inside of the inner rim is a satin light red mahogany with a horizontal grain that contrasts nicely with the black matte outer rim. There are two lid props; long and short, for different tastes in displaying the lid of your piano. Wide carpet-roller casters enable the piano to be moved easily and protect your carpet or wooden floors, plus they are handsome. Though it’s a baby grand, it has most of the features found in its bigger brothers.

Over 800,000 pianos sold according to the Pierce Piano Atlas.

Kohler & Campbell began building pianos in 1894. The factory was located in New York City. In the 1950’s a new factory was built in Granite Falls, North Carolina, taking advantage of the excellent lumber mills and talented local craftsmen. That region was known for its fine furniture making. With over 800,000 pianos built, this has been one of the most popular piano manufacturers in the history of American piano building. The factory finally closed and production ceased in the US in 1985. One of the largest piano companies in the world, Samick Musical Instruments of South Korea acquired the rights in the late 1990’s to build the Kohler & Campbell piano again and this model was manufactured in their modern state-of-the-art factory in Indonesia. Sadly, due to economic trends the Kohler & Campbell piano was discontinued recently for the North American market, though it’s still sold elsewhere.
