Young Chang 48″ Professional Piano
This piano was purchased here in Albuquerque in 1987 and has lived here for its entire life. It is happily acclimated to our unique and challenging climate and it is dimensionally stable. The condition is excellent – structurally and aesthetically. The moving parts, hammer and damper felts and strings have minimal wear. There aren’t any replacement strings. It should provide decades of musical enjoyment. Its tone is lively and the timbre is toward the bright side of medium. At 48”, the Young Chang model U-121 Upright piano is the tallest of the studio uprights where the standard is 45” so the strings are longer, and the soundboard is larger measured in area. Therefore, it has a strong tone and a robust bass end. Longer strings vibrate with more power and for a longer period so the duration of tone (sustain) is longer. The touch-weight of the action is moderate and it plays responsively. Bigger action parts and longer levers provide a better leverage situation We have it well-regulated and ready to perform on. This model is finished in classic polished ebony. The matching bench is original and has music storage.
In 1956 Incheon, South Korea, the three brothers Kim named Jai-Young, Jai-Chang and Jai-Sup reached an agreement with the Yamaha Piano Company of Japan to sell their pianos. Korea was recovering from the devastating war but prospects were bright. Sales were brisk. Economic policies changed and in 1964 they began receiving partially built pianos sent over from Japan to escape stiff tariffs on Japanese goods. The factory finished the pianos and sold them. Eventually, the piano factory was building complete pianos. Ties were severed with Yamaha in 1975, becoming a competitor and the Young Chang Piano Company was born. The factory is one of the largest in the world. It has built models for numerous other manufacturers over the years including Steinway & Sons and Baldwin. US distribution began in 1978. In 1990 they acquired Kurzweil, a manufacturer of professional keyboards and digital pianos.
