The piano was built in the Story & Clark piano factory in Grand Haven, Michigan; the heart of “Furniture Country” due to its numerous furniture factories. Logging and lumber mills thrived there due to the vast forests of diverse timber in the area which included the northern US and Canada. Hardwoods and softwoods were plentiful. A piano is constructed with various and different species of wood, depending on the need or function, whether it be strength, flexibility, density, beauty, uniformity of grain, etc. so the location was an advantage. The piano has lived in Albuquerque for decades and it is happily acclimated and well-adjusted to our unique climate, so it ought to provide decades more of musical enjoyment to the new owner. There is minimal wear for its age on the hammers and damper felts, plus the other moving action and trapwork parts. All of the tuning pins are tight so it will hold its tuning. Loose tuning pins are a common problem in our dry and arid climate, and they are costly to repair and can be aggravating for the psyche. It spent two weeks in our restoration shop and received the normal tunings and pitch-raises, minor action regulations and thorough cleaning of the interior. We will be happy to offer a two-year warranty, in-home tuning and professional local, first-floor delivery.

This Steinway & Sons grand piano is one of the finest musical instruments in human history, and it was built by the 3rd-generation Steinway family in New York City. Steinway & Sons is the piano that every other is judged by. It is handcrafted and took a full year to build. The Steinway company has held nearly all of the important patents in the industry and the family has always participated in all of the significant operations of the factory. Steinway is nearly exclusively responsible for improving and modernizing piano manufacturing throughout the 19^th and 20^th centuries. In the world of musical instruments, there are pianos – and then there are Steinway & Sons. They enjoy a reputation second to none. Historically, the Steinway model M grand piano is their most popular model and its medium size makes it an excellent home instrument. It isn’t a secret that pre-owned Steinway & Sons pianos that have been restored are the biggest competition to the sale of exorbitantly priced brand new models.

The white Natural keys are authentic ivory and original. The black Sharp keys are lacquered wood and not plastic. We refurbished the core of the instrument and refinished it in a classic ebonized lacquer finish with a red mahogany-wood music rack, fallboard above the keys and inner rim inside the case. The company has a long history dating back into the 19th-century of creating Art-case pianos like this one. The nation’s White-house has a very intricate and regal one with large American Bald-eagles representing the three legs. A quick Google search will reveal pictures of that piano.

The Steinway & Sons grand piano action, with its 12,116 individual parts is the vanguard of piano actions. Steinway held most of the patents issued to piano manufacturers for action improvements including the exclusive “Accelerated Action”, which increases the speed of repetition. The patented Tubular Metallic action frame maintains proper alignment of the thousands of action parts. A grand piano-action regulation requires 14 separate adjustments per key. Our talented 88 Keys piano-technicians who work in our restoration shop have been busy and the piano-action has been well-regulated and ready now for concert performances.

This 1917 Steinway & Sons model O parlor grand piano is one of the finest musical instruments ever built. It is the largest of Steinway’s “smaller” pianos. This was the golden era of American piano building and Steinway & Sons was the piano that every other was judged by. It is handcrafted and took a full year to build. The Steinway factory held most of the important patents in the industry and the family participated in all of the significant operations. In the world of musical instruments, there are pianos – and then there are Steinway & Sons. The model O features the classic “Steinway sound”; having a strong, singing treble and a powerful bass, rich in high harmonics. The duration of tone (sustain time) is lengthy, which enables legato phrases to be enjoyed. The dynamic range is wide, allowing the pianist to play expressively and emotively. The mid-treble, where most of the melody lines are played “sings” and doesn’t disappear under the background of an accompaniment. It has the power that most pianos aspire to but not the brash “loudness” that often results. This permits the clarity of tone that Steinway & Sons is well-known for – the ability to clearly hear each individual note played in a chord or group of notes. Otherwise, a “muddy” tone results. This instrument is suitable for the more advanced player, professional pianist or anyone with superior or acute hearing. Any music school, teaching studio and institutional setting would benefit from this piano.

Hand-made by American and German craftsmen

This piano was completely restored recently in our restoration shop. The very finest materials and construction techniques were employed in this extensive eight month process. Pianos Bolduc from Montreal, Canada is the company that produces the current Steinway & Sons pinblocks, so we constructed a new highest-quality 5-ply quarter-sawn, tight-grained rock maple Bolduc pinblock and painstakingly fitted and doweled it into the piano’s inner rim. Steinway always glues and dowels its pinblocks rather than allowing them to “float” between the rim ends like nearly all other makers do. This makes their restorations quite a bit more difficult. New, premium German-made Renner Blue Point hammers, shanks and flanges replaced the originals. They are the same as used in the Hamburg Steinway & Sons models built in Germany. The dampers, wires and damper felts were also replaced with Renner. The repetition levers and springs were replaced with Renner, as were the let-off buttons and backchecks. It was re-strung with new Steinway bass strings and music wire. The flame-mahogany cabinet was gently stripped and beautifully refinished by our experts. So was the plate, and re-lacquered with genuine “Steinway gold”, the traditional hue for Steinway plates.

A poignant piece of Steinway & Sons history

The soundboard was in excellent condition surprisingly, requiring no repairs or replacing, so all we needed to do was clean and refinish with fresh lacquer. The original soundboard decal was lost to the refinish but we replaced it with the identical design. It shows the State Seals and Medallions of twelve pre-WW1 countries and kingdoms that owned Steinway & Sons pianos in their palaces, castles or official Houses of Government. After the war ended, some of these governments no longer existed. The factory ceased applying these soundboard decals at this point in deference to these historical changes. The piano was built in 1917 and this important serial number (187812) is one of the very last Steinway & Sons grand pianos to sport this unique decal. Due to enforcement of their rights to this proprietary logo these official decals are now no longer available to rebuilders, making this a very unique piano.

Behold, the aged, yet flawless ivory keys!

The genuine ivory keytops were carefully cleaned and bleached. It is rare indeed to find ivory in such wonderful condition after all these years. They are in gorgeous condition with a warm, soft-white lustrous glow. The wooden sharp keys were cleaned and lacquered black to perfection. All of the cabinet hardware, plate bolts and casters were re-plated in brass. The new piano-action components have been well-regulated, the new strings stretched and tuned several times, and the piano is finally ready now for concert performances. 88 Keys Piano Warehouse will be happy to warrant our restoration work for two years.

This is truly a historical piece of Americana. The piano was purported to be shipped by railroad to New Mexico shortly after being built. It was most recently sold in 1991 by Riedling Music, the sole New Mexico Steinway & Sons dealership for 75 years.

Hand-crafted in Haverhill, Massachusetts. This classic Mason & Hamlin grand piano is nearly new. It was built in 2000 and purchased locally in 2001 then lived in Albuquerque’s north valley the entire time since. It is finished in mahogany satin lacquer with a topcoat of polyester resins for durability. It includes the original adjustable Artist bench. Excellent technicians have cared for the piano regularly. The legendary model BB is designed for spacious homes, conservatories of music, professional recording studios, auditoriums and for serious pianists. It has a wonderful mellow and cultured tone quality and a long-lasting duration of tone comparable to full concert grand pianos. The timbre consists of a bell-like clarity in the treble, a warm harmonic resonance in the tenor and an exceptionally powerful bass response sometimes called “the growl”. This distinctive Mason & Hamlin tone is the result of a piano that is built using the original Boston model BB design with scrupulous attention to detail and accuracy. It is precisely installed by hand and is pre-crowned and tapered for optimal tonal resonance. The pinblock is built using 7-ply quarter-sawn hard-rock maple. Each layer is carefully positioned at a 90-degree angle for maximum strength in gripping the tuning pins. The rim is remarkably thick with 18-ply laminations, the beams are overly sturdy, and the sand-cast grey iron plate has a full perimeter design for extra strength. Mason & Hamlin – Then and now…

In 1854, two brilliant idealists, Henry Mason and Emmons Hamlin, founded the Mason & Hamlin Piano Company in Boston, Massachusetts: the birthplace of American piano design and manufacturing. Although their backgrounds and interests were very different, the two men shared a common goal: to make the world’s finest musical instruments. In 1996 one of the most successful businesses in the industry was PianoDisc, a manufacturer of computerized player systems for acoustic pianos. Gary and Kirk Burgett, the owners, were longtime fans of Mason & Hamlin pianos. When they heard the company was for sale, they bought it. Just like the original founders, the Burgett brothers brought unique and diverse experience and interests to their partnership.

The 1868 patented Tubular Metallic action frame maintains proper alignment of the action parts. It consists of seamless brass tubes with rosette-shaped contours, force fitted with maple dowels and brass hangers. The keys are constructed from Bavarian spruce that is high in tensile strength to prevent breakage. The Steinway & Sons pinblock makes it easier to tune the piano precisely and stay in tune longer than others. The Diaphramatic soundboard (US Patent Office – 1936) tapers from five to eight millimeters in thickness from the center to the perimeter. It is constructed from the highest-grade, close-grained, quarter-sawn Sitka spruce from Alaska. Planks are hand-selected to be free of defects and at the end of the day, there is more wood on the floor than actually made it into the piano.
